Business analysis is the practice of enabling change in an enterprise by defining needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders.

In other words, business analysis is the discipline focusing on identifying business needs, problems, and opportunities, and on determining the appropriate solutions to address them. This may result in lunching new projects and initiatives that may focus on systems development, process improvement, organizational change, or some combination of the three. In addition, business analysis maybe performed on different levels of the organization: strategic, tactical, and operational.
The business analyst is an agent of change. This means that a professional business analyst helps businesses to create value for their stakeholders in the best possible way in order to achieve their short-term and long-term goals, which ultimately leads to change in the organization.

Job titles for business analysis practitioners include not only business analyst, but also business systems analyst, systems analyst, requirements engineer, process analyst, product manager, product owner, organizational analyst, business architect, management consultant, business intelligence analyst, data scientist, and so on. Many other careers, such as management, project management, product management, software development, quality assurance, and interaction design, rely heavily on business analysis skills for success.

Business analysis is used to identify and articulate the need for change in the way organizations operate and to facilitate that change. As a business analyst, I identify and define solutions that maximize the value an organization delivers to its stakeholders. Business analysts work at all levels of an organization and may be involved in everything from defining strategy, creating enterprise architecture, to taking a leadership role by defining goals and requirements for programs and projects, or supporting continuous improvement in its technology and processes.

The value of business analysis lies in realizing benefits, avoiding costs, identifying new opportunities, understanding required capabilities, and modeling the organization. Through the effective use of business analysis, we can ensure that an organization realizes these benefits and ultimately uses them to improve the way it does business.

Business analysis is performed on a variety of initiatives within a company. Initiatives may be strategic, tactical, or operational. Business analysis may be performed within the scope of a project or across all parts of the organization for the purpose of company evolution and continuous improvement. It can be used to understand the current state, define the future state, and determine the activities required to move from the current state to the future.
